Year in Review..

December 17, 2011

Hello folks. Thanks for checking back in.

We’re celebrating the holidays with ‘A Cowboy Angel Christmas’! Join us in Athens this Sunday night:
SUN DEC 18th- Hendershot’s Coffee, 8pm- close
Feat. The Granfalloons, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires, Little Country Giants, Daniel Aaron + Holly Belle (of Vespolina) & Justin Evans!

Cowboy Angel Music has been fairly quiet, as a label, this year. Following the multi-release 2010 (with albums from Little Country Giants, Adam Klein, Nutria & Timber, all on the heels of Justin Evans and The Granfalloons‘ late 2009 records), this year mainly saw the bands playing shows and even realigning.

But 2012 looks to be a busy and exciting year! Adam Klein’s Mali album, Dugu Wolo, will be released in February, and Big C & The Ringers will be putting out a killer debut. Check back in for other great announcements of new CAM artists in this new year! Plus a whole lot more in store.

We had a successful Athens Americana and a packed AthFest show featuring Little Country Giants, The Granfalloons, Vespolina, and Big C & The Ringers. Justin Evans also represented with a nice show at Flicker for AthFest.

The news & band run-downs:
Adam Klein-
Adam toured and played throughout this year, supporting his latest release, Wounded Electric Youth, including shows at Folk Alliance, a European tour (Netherlands and UK), and San Fran’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival after-party, sharing the stage with an array of great artists from Josh Ritter, Fred Eaglesmith, Joe Pug, Shawn Mullins, Larkin Poe, American Aquarium, Dan Bern, Lucy Kaplansky, and more.

The new band, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires (feat. Steve Abercrombie on bass, Crash Cason on electric guitar, and Bronson Tew on drums), is off and running, having hit the road in the fall with shows throughout the southeast and local shows at the 40 Watt, Melting Point, and other cool spots.

Adam started working on a record backed by Nutria this summer and we hope to keep progressing on it in the coming months for a summer/fall 2012 release. This one rocks.

Beyond that, we announced the new Songworthy songwriting project (songs about the Global South and issues of international sustainable development) and the MALI FILM TRAILER was completed this year. “Driftin’” was featured on the 2011 AthFest CD, Adam interviewed Vieux Farka Toure for Flagpole Magazine, and the upcoming Mali album, Dugu Wolo (to be released February 2012!), was featured on Afropop, Africa Is A Country, and Seattle’s KEXP’s stellar “Best Ambiance” program.

Keep up-to-date on Adam and The Wild Fires via www.adam-klein.com. Most of January and March Adam will be off in Ghana, Mali, and Nicaragua, but look out for shows and news on his site.

Little Country Giants-
Little Country Giants‘ music (nine songs!) was featured as the soundtrack to the award-winning documentary on Georgia’s organic farmers, GROW!. Check out the fabulous video for “I Think of You” HERE. LCG’s had a great year of shows, including top Atlanta venues The Earl, Eddie’s Attic, Smith’s Olde Bar, and Park Tavern’s ‘Americana in the Park’.

Meanwhile, LCG’s Russell Cook has been working with heavy-hitters T-Bone Burnett, John Mellencamp, and Stephen King on their upcoming 2012 Alliance Theater production, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.

Justin Evans-
One of Athens best-kept secrets has been playing a handful of shows, including the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival after-party in San Francisco. He’s got a slew of new songs written and we’re psyched for y’all to hear them this coming year!

The Granfalloons-
These guys are one of Athens’ finest musical treats, and they’ve surfaced for a show every now and then this year. They’ll be back in action in 2012, so stay tuned for the ‘Falloons.

Timber morphed into Vespolina, whose excellent self-titled new record will be on its way out for reviews and radio shortly.

Nutria has made some changes and we’ll update y’all on where they’re headed when that news comes down the pike.

We’re back and getting busy these coming months. Thanks for your support and we wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

Vespolina + The Wild Fires..

November 15, 2011

Well hello. Been a bit since the last post. First off, please welcome… VESPOLINA!

Vespolina’s newly released self-titled record is tremendous. Look for a bio and additional info here shortly. For now, have a look and listen over at their Bandcamp and ReverbNation pages.

So, supporters of the Kickstarter campaign can expect to get copies by the new year and info on release date in the first quarter of 2012 will be forthcoming.

More soon..

The Wild Fires, Mali news, shows & more…

September 5, 2011

A fair number of shows and various news to report this month:

Adam Klein’s band project has officially been named! Please welcome Adam Klein & The Wild Fires to a stage near you this fall and beyond. The Wild Fires are long-time collaborators and ‘Adam Klein & friends’ members Steve Abercrombie (ex-Blueground Undergrass, The Nice Machine) on bass, Crash Cason (Kaitlin Jones & The County Fair) on electric guitar, and the pride (and border war culprit) of Mississippi and Alabama, Bronson Tew on drums. Check out Bronson’s projects and info at his Record-O-Van blog.

Adam’s Mali album and film project is featured on one of the finest blogs about all-things Africa. Read an extensive interview with Adam and view the film trailer at Africa Is a Country.

In other related Mali news, Adam interviewed Malian musician Vieux Farka Toure for his recent visit to the Georgia Theatre in Athens. Have a look at the article and interview online at Flagpole Magazine.

FRI SEPT 9th- Hummingbird Stage & Taproom (Macon, GA), 10pm
FRI SEPT 23rd- Little Kings (Athens, GA), 9pm
Luau show w/ Kinky Waikiki (feat. CAM collaborators AJ Adams and Carlton Owens)

Come October, Adam Klein & Justin Evans will be out on in San Francisco during the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. West coast CAM’ers, catch them at Super Bluegrass Weekend vol. 6, the coolest ‘official unofficial’ Hardly Strictly after-party!
SAT OCT 1st- Plough & Stars (San Francisco, CA), 8:30pm

And finally, we’re dangerously close to sending Adam’s Mali album, Dugu Wolo, to the manufacturing plant. Artwork, package design, and mighty fine booklet featuring an essay, description of the instrumentation, notes on the significance of the songs, photos, etc. is nearing completion. Expect more info on Lassine Kouyate’s (that’s Adam’s Bambara name) Dugu Wolo in the next few weeks!

Oh shoot, there’s more! To top it off, Adam’s been recording with Nutria at drummer Jason Eshelman’s Sonic Research Facility. It’s a fun, garage rock collection with one or two select covers. Electric guitars, Rhodes piano, harmonies… we hope Neil Young would be proud.

Happy Labor Day & good luck with the rain! Might actually cool down for a bit.
See ya at the show,
CAM
